From Causation to Stability

11.1 Orientation

Chapter 10 formalized the central theorem: physics is ontologically incomplete.
This chapter answers the constructive question that follows:

If laws are not fundamental, what replaces them as the organizing principle of reality?

The answer is coherence.

Coherence does not replace laws by adding new axioms.
It replaces them by explaining why laws appear at all.


11.2 Why Law-Based Explanation Breaks Down

Traditional explanation proceeds as: [ \text{State} \xrightarrow{\text{Law}} \text{Next State} ]

This presupposes:

  • fixed identity,
  • fixed ontology,
  • fixed measurement semantics.

But Chapters 4–6 showed:

  • identity is emergent,
  • ontology is secondary,
  • semantics is observer-bound.

Thus causation cannot be primitive.


11.3 Stability as the New Primitive

We introduce a new explanatory primitive:

Stability under admissible transformation.

A phenomenon is “explained” when we show that:

  • it persists under all coherence-preserving changes,
  • it cannot be altered without breaking observer compatibility.

This notion is deeper than causation.


11.4 Definition of Coherence Stability

Definition 11.1 (Coherence-Stable Structure)

A structure ( S ) is coherence-stable iff: [ \forall \mathfrak{T} \in \mathcal{A},\quad \mathfrak{T}(S) \cong S ] where ( \mathcal{A} ) is the class of admissible coherence-preserving transformations.

Stability replaces necessity.


11.5 Explanation Without Laws

In a coherence-first framework:

  • To explain energy conservation
    → show invariance under time-coherence transformations.

  • To explain Lorentz symmetry
    → show invariance under observer-frame coherence.

  • To explain classicality
    → show stability of certain equivalence classes under decoherence.

Explanation becomes structural, not causal.


11.6 Causation as a Derived Concept

Causation is not fundamental.

It emerges when:

  • stability is asymmetric,
  • projection is irreversible,
  • semantic closure fixes directionality.

Causation is a shadow of coherence plus projection.


11.7 Time Reinterpreted

Time is traditionally the parameter of change.

Here, time is reinterpreted as:

an ordering of semantic stabilization events.

The arrow of time arises because:

  • semantic closure is irreversible,
  • projection loses information,
  • coherence aligns observers forward, not backward.

Entropy becomes a secondary descriptor of semantic loss.


11.8 Laws as Compression, Not Command

Laws do not command reality.

They compress it.

A law is a minimal description of what remains invariant across a coherence class.

This explains:

  • why laws are simple,
  • why they generalize,
  • why mathematics works.

11.9 Why This Is Still Science

Replacing laws with coherence does not weaken science.

It strengthens it by:

  • explaining why laws work,
  • predicting where they fail,
  • unifying anomalies under one principle.

Science becomes:

the study of stable structure under admissible forgetting.


11.10 Consequences for Prediction

Prediction no longer means:

“apply law forward in time.”

It means:

“identify which structures remain coherence-stable under the projection relevant to the observer.”

This reframes prediction as regime identification.


11.11 Relation to Physics Practice

Nothing changes operationally:

  • experiments still run,
  • equations still compute,
  • technologies still work.

What changes is interpretation:

  • laws are no longer ontological bedrock,
  • they are emergent summaries.

11.12 Transition

We have now replaced law with coherence as the fundamental explanatory principle.
